ESS hosted the annual outing for the Kids Connect Program through the United Community Builders of Columbia. This is an opportunity to for kids to explore opportunities the construction industry.

We started with a safety meeting and explaining what we were doing for the day. After a group picture with MoDOT’s Barrel Bob the kids were off the explore the six stations of fun activities.

Station 1 was a ready mix truck with sand on it to simulate placing concrete in a form and then the skills it takes to finish concrete once it was placed.

Station 2 mixed and cast a stepping stone in a small form (pie pan) and then each kid could personalize it with decorations.

Station 3 was an equipment simulator where they learned how to operate an excavator.

Station 4 was an interactive exhibit with our drone where they were able to see what the drone was seeing on a television and they were tasked with spotting hard hats spread out across the lot.

Station 5 was two mini excavators where the students took their knowledge from the simulator and put it to work by digging in the dirt.

Station 6 was a game where participants divided into two teams for a relay race. The teams had to put on safety gear that included a vest, gloves, glasses and a hard hat. They then ran to a cone and took off the gear to give to their teammate who put the gear on and then ran back to the starting cone to pass off to another teammate. This continued until everyone completed the course.
