When we say we’re committed to quality at ESS, that applies to every batch of the more than 1.2 million tons of hot-mix asphalt our plant team produces each year. We continuously test the material before it goes out the door of our 12 plant locations to ensure it meets the quality guarantee we make to our customers and clients. We do so using advanced technology and lab-testing techniques to custom manufacture the material to meet project specifications.
As one of the region’s largest hot-mix producers, ESS is also committed to being environmentally responsible throughout our operations. This includes recycling nearly 100% of the asphalt removed by the milling process, saving costs for our clients and the environment.

The majority of our asphalt goes to ESS paving projects, but we also sell a significant amount to outside customers too. That includes UPM, our cold-mix patching product, for contractors, municipalities, and counties. Our approach is to give customers outside ESS the same great quality of service as our crews on the inside.

Unique Paving Materials (UPM) is ESS’ high-quality, proven cold-mix patching product, trusted by MoDOT and now available to contractors, cities, and counties across our service areas. Whether it’s a pothole, a ditch-line repair, or a street that needs to hold through winter, UPM is ready when you are.
- Proven on the highway: UPM patches have been tested under real conditions, including I-55 semi-truck traffic.
- Easy to get: Cold mix is available in bulk, delivered or picked up, with regional availability growing.

Recycled Asphalt Materials
Old Roads Make New Mix
As one of the region’s largest hot-mix producers, ESS is committed to being environmentally responsible throughout our operations. We’ve invested considerable resources and energy to increase the amount of recycled material, such as previously laid asphalt and used roofing shingles, in our asphalt mixes.
That commitment carries over from what goes into our mix to the energy it takes to make it. Energy reduction is both environmentally responsible and incredibly cost-effective. We invest in energy-efficient plant components to reduce the energy consumed in production and pass savings on to our customers.

Does ESS sell asphalt to outside contractors?
Yes! ESS supplies asphalt for outside contractors as well as our own paving crews. The majority of our asphalt goes to ESS projects, and we sell a significant amount to external customers. For asphalt material sales, contact the plant nearest your project.

UPM stands for Unique Paving Materials, ESS’ high-quality, proven cold-mix patching product for potholes and other road repairs. Do ESS plants manufacture asphalt year-round?
Unfortunately, our region is typically shut down for paving during winter months due to cold temperatures. However, we limit seasonal downtime for plant personnel by using winter months for routine maintenance and training.

While the individual production capacity varies by plant, our facilities have collectively produced more than 1.2 Million tons of asphalt in a single calendar year to serve customers in the Midwest.
