KLAY CAMDEN: SPRINGFIELD BUSINESS JOURNAL 40 UNDER 40 RECIPIENT
From learning to drive a John Deere backhoe as a child to leading multi-million-dollar projects like the Kansas Expressway, Klay Camden has spent his career building the critical infrastructure that keeps the Springfield region moving. His leadership continues to leave a lasting mark on the community. Join us in congratulating Klay for earning his spot as one of the Springfield Business Journal’s 40 under 40!
Leading Under Pressure
Klay’s leadership style has been shaped by learning from respected mentors and being part of dynamic teams. Throughout his career, he has taken lessons from each leader he has worked with and put them into practice by leading strong construction teams on projects across the Springfield area.
When Klay joined ESS, he was tasked with leading the team responsible for constructing a new runway intersection at Joplin Regional Airport. With just 10 days to complete the work and severe weather on the way, Klay made sure plans were in place for every situation. During the closure period, the crew removed more than 800 feet of runway and repaved it to an 18-inch thickness.
The team opened the runway 36 hours ahead of schedule. A milestone that strengthened relationships with the airport and showed ESS’ ability to execute complex, time-sensitive projects.
After leading several successful projects, Klay was selected to oversee Phase Two of the Kansas Expressway for ESS. When excessive rock excavation became a major challenge, he worked with engineers, geologists, and local stakeholders to develop an alternative solution — leaving a split-face rock wall in place. The value-engineered approach created a unique roadway feature while saving Greene County more than $500,000.
Giving Back
When Klay is not at work, he remains deeply involved in the Springfield community through Gen Next, coaching youth softball, and serving as a 4-H project leader.
As part of the Springfield Contractors Association Gen Next program, he participates in annual events such as a bowling fundraiser and the Bass Bash Fishing Tournament, both of which will support local charities and organizations.
Through his work with youth softball and 4-H, he is focused on developing the next generation by teaching the value of hard work, responsibility, and character. His goal is to help shape better people — not just better athletes or livestock exhibitors.
“Klay is the kind of leader who makes everyone around him better. He’s committed to developing his team, building strong relationships, and always doing the right thing, even when the pressure is high,” says Paul Moody, Vice President. “His passion for this industry and for the community reflects who we are as an employee-owned company, and this recognition is well deserved.”
Building a Legacy at ESS
Klay takes pride in building more than infrastructure — he’s helping build the next generation of leaders. His commitment to developing strong teams and investing in people continues to leave a lasting impact across the company and the Springfield community.
