ESS is a true earthmoving expert. We have decades of experience, a deep bench of skilled operators, and an arsenal of heavy iron.

Earthmoving Experts

Digging Deeper with unmatched resources

Moving dirt and rock is in our DNA. It’s how ESS was formed more than 50 years ago and to this day remains an essential part of who we are and what we do. Even after moving millions of yards of material, we are still as passionate about earthwork as our founders were in 1972.

The experts that form our grading and excavating operations push the boundaries of what’s possible using state-of-the-art equipment and resources that are unmatched by our competitors. Using advanced industry technology, paired with experience in all types of earthwork, we’re optimizing production to deliver a superior experience for all our project partners.

What sets our Earthwork apart

We didn’t get to be one of the region’s leading earthmovers by accident. Our strategy and execution in several key areas position ESS a level above.

Partner Testimonials

In both projects, I observed that ESS frequently implemented additional erosion control devices beyond the required amount set forth in the plans with and without my prior recommendations. Their willingness to adapt to the ever evolving SWPPP documents and site conditions was and is a key component to the success of these two high profile projects.

Timothy Robins
Project Engineer, Springfield Special Inspections

ESS has been a great asset to our projects providing turn-key civil infrastructure services. They continue to be a trusted partner on our project team demonstrating their knowledge and helping to provide solutions to problems that arise. They also consistently demonstrate their ability to maintain safety, quality, and production standards throughout the duration of these projects.

Brad Haymond
Director of Multi-Family, North Point Development

It’s always challenging when collaborating with an unfamiliar contractor, however to say I’m impressed with the results would be an understatement. The effort from ESS exceeded my expectations and we look forward to working with them again in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about how we move dirt

We love talking about our grading and excavating operations. In fact, we could go on for days about our approach. Here are some questions we’re used to hearing.

  • What’s training like for new operators at ESS?

On-the-job training is a huge part of how operators grow their skills. New operators at ESS work with foremen and superintendents to assess their existing skill-level and place them in the right position for continued growth and success.

  • Does ESS offer grading and excavating as a stand-alone service?

Yes! While ESS does perform stand-alone grading activities when we’re able to combine that with our other lines of business, we most often act as a full-service contractor to expedite project delivery.

  • How does ESS protect against erosion and runoff on large earthwork projects?

We follow industry-standard management practices, working with state and local jurisdictions to make sure all stormwater regulations are adhered to. Our standard practice also includes establishing vegetation in surrounding areas following project completion.

  • Is there a particular area of earthwork that ESS specializes in?

We do it all. Whether we’re blasting and hauling rock, moving mass quantities of earth, or putting the final grading touches on the project — ESS is an expert in all areas of grading and excavation.

  • What’s the area of operation for ESS grading and excavation crews?

While ESS does travel broadly throughout the United States on occasion, our grading and excavation crews operate primarily throughout the Central Midwest region and surrounding areas.
