Groundbreaking ceremony marks phase two commencement of Springdale Bypass project
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) officially broke ground last week on phase two of the highly anticipated Springdale Bypass project. The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) on Wednesday, April 17, included remarks from ARDOT leadership, the Arkansas Highway Commission and local dignitaries.
Phase two of the Springdale Bypass project was awarded to Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS), a local infrastructure contractor. As the largest traditional bid-build project in Arkansas state history, the Springdale Bypass is the final link connecting Interstate 49 and Highway 412 between Benton and Washington counties. The new road will enhance connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion and improve overall accessibility for local businesses.
ESS Assistant Vice President Jason Eldredge expressed enthusiasm about the transformative impact of the project:
“The Springdale Bypass represents a significant milestone in enhancing the local infrastructure of this rapidly growing area in Northwest Arkansas,” he said. “We’re committed to delivering a high-quality project that will shape the future of this region and beyond.”
Key features of the Springdale Bypass project include:
- Improved traffic flow: By providing a direct route between I-49 and HWY 412, the bypass will reduce travel time and congestion, enhancing the efficiency of regional transportation networks.
- Stimulated economic growth: With improved access to commercial areas, the Springdale Bypass is expected to stimulate economic development, allow easier access to businesses and create job opportunities within the community.
- Enhanced safety: The bypass will alleviate bottlenecks and problem areas with a more consistent traffic flow.
This phase of the project includes a seven-mile, four-lane divided interstate with 15 bridges. ESS will execute 3.7 million cubic yards of grading and excavation and 187,826 tons of asphalt paving. Phase two of the project is expected to be complete by August 2026.
“This project has been discussed and in the planning stage for a long time,” said Paul Arnold, executive vice president of ESS. “We’re excited to officially put boots on the ground and start doing the work on a project years in the making.”
In addition to the Springdale Bypass, other work will include a connector road to Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA), a project awarded to Crossland Construction. The 4-mile connector road will allow travelers to access XNA from the Springdale Bypass. This will ease freight travel and decrease the potential of missed flights due to traffic congestion. Construction is expected to be completed on the XNA connector in 2027.
