Project Overview
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Cass County I-94 project is reconstructing 4.855 miles of I-94 in Fargo, North Dakota. After years of heavy traffic and commuters every day, sections of the interstate required rehabilitation to strengthen the pavement and improve its smoothness.
Working closely with NDDOT, Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) was selected as the general contractor to perform all diamond grinding, concrete paving, and pavement repairs on I-94. The scope of work includes full-width diamond grinding across 182,289 square yards, along with 800,562 square yards of full-depth concrete repairs, and 18,578 square feet of small and partial pavement repairs.
To maintain traffic on the busy interstate while repairing the road, the project team closed two lanes of the three-lane roadway, while controlling traffic on one lane and a shoulder.
One of the main challenges ESS is facing is the level of detail required. Many of the repairs are small and each one demands careful layout, precise execution, and close coordination with the project crews. In order to maintain this level of detail, communication is key. Superintendent Shane Johnson led the project teams and kept communication open between crews to ensure safety remains a top priority.
Once complete, I-94 will offer a smoother, safer, and longer-lasting driving surface, extending the lifespan of the interstate for years to come.
