ESS Is Making Safety Cool Again

Employee-owners across Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) came together for Safety Stand-Downs focused on heat safety and building a stronger safety culture. 

The work we do matters. The roads. The bridges. The infrastructure that keeps America moving. But none of it happens without the people behind it. 

That’s why employee-owners across the jobsites took time this summer to pause production, gather as teams and focus on the thing that matters most — getting everyone home safe.  

Through Safety Stand-Downs, crews across branches, shops, and active projects came together for conversations centered around safety expectations and looking out for one another.  

Because safety isn’t just a rulebook or a checklist. It’s the decisions made every day in the field. It’s wearing the right PPE. Speaking up when something doesn’t look right. Taking care of your crew. Making the call that protects the people around you. 

During the Stand-Downs, ESS leadership and the health and safety team reinforced key initiatives and the importance of staying aware during the summer heat. Employee-owners also got a chance to connect outside of the day-to-day work, grab some ESS safety gear, enjoy refreshments, and celebrate the commitment that keeps our crews moving. 

From high-vis shirts to safety reminders and a little friendly camaraderie, the goal was to create a moment that people remembered. 

Because health and safety culture isn’t built in a meeting.  

It’s built in the field. 

It’s built when employee-owners hold each other accountable. 

It’s built when someone speaks up. 

It’s built when every person on the crew knows they have a responsibility to protect the people next to them. 

At ESS, ownership means more than having a stake in the company. It means owning the work, owning the outcome, and owning the safety of the people around you.  

As summer construction continues, the message remains the same:
