The Urban Outfitters Fulfillment Center is a 90-acre warehouse distribution project adjacent to the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) was selected as the infrastructure contractor for this massive industrial development that included excavation and grading services, underground utility installation, as well as asphalt and concrete paving for the building site and parking areas. ESS was also contracted to place the 6” aggregate base for the building pad.

ESS assembled a diverse and talented group of employee-owners, subcontractors and material suppliers to join the project team and mobilized immediately.

This project had an extremely tight schedule for the first phase of construction. Clearing operations began on November 23, 2021. The client required the northern half of the building pad to be completed by the end of December, and the southern portion completed by the end of January. ESS took on the challenge to exceed these demands and completed the entire building pad by December 31st. To deliver these exceptional results, this meant our grading crews were moving an average of 20,000 cubic yards of dirt a day.

Alongside our mass grading efforts, ESS installed 41,481 linear feet of underground utilities and placed 27,128 square yards of concrete. This encompassed all of the curbing and sidewalk around the building, a large parking lot, and a new roadway that connects to the parking lot.

All project personnel shared the same culture of performance and helped our crews see this project all the way to final completion. For going above and beyond, ESS earned an additional bonus for helping our partners expedite the project schedule beyond their expectations. Our remarkable ability to deliver a pad-ready site in such a short time frame is something that’s highly uncommon in the Midwest.

In addition to bonuses awarded by the client, ESS won the Excellence in Construction award from the Heart of America chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors in 2022. It was an honor to be recognized for our safety, quality, and speed of delivery that exceeded the expectations of our client and project partners.
