Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS), along with design partner Bartlett & West, were awarded the contract for the $14.4 million Mineola Hill Truck Climbing project in Mineola Hill, Missouri. The teams were challenged to provide MoDOT with the optimum solution to fixing I-70’s two biggest non-urban bottlenecks. Crews facilitated the complete replacement of the overflow bridges on I-70 over the Loutre River. More than 2,600 square yards of structural concrete was poured as well as just under 130,000 pounds of structural steel on the eastbound bridge.

A third lane was added to both East and Westbound I-70 near mile marker 170 at Danville, providing commercial vehicles a chance to get out of higher speed traffic while going up the steep grade hill. The ESS Team was committed to MoDOT and its goals for the I-70 Truck Climbing Lanes at Mineola Hill. Our team prioritized MoDOT’s needs and developed a winning approach that maximized their financial investment.

ESS exercised flexibility with each obstacle they encountered. A large section of the East bound and West bound passing lanes required the crew to blast existing rock before continuing. ESS established a detailed communication plan in order to blast, clear the road, and reopen one lane of I-70 within a span of 15 minutes.

The crews diamond grinded nearly 30,000 square yards of concrete and dug out an additional 50,000 square yards of base rock. Working alongside our partners, ESS developed a competitive schedule which allowed us to complete this project earlier than anticipated. The fifth and final segment was opened to the public more than 120 days ahead of schedule.
