Project Overview
Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) crews are helping bring utility-scale renewable energy to southeast Kansas through the Sunflower Sky Solar Farm, a 65-megawatt solar facility located on more than 500 acres near Altoona in Wilson County. Once complete, the project will generate clean energy capable of powering thousands of homes while supporting local economic growth and infrastructure investment in the region.
Serving as a subcontractor, ESS crews will self-perform the majority of the civil work on the project, applying the same expertise and disciplined execution that defines ESS operations across the Midwest. The team will complete mass grading operations totaling more than 366,000 cubic yards of earthwork while constructing approximately 36,500 square yards of access roads and cement-treated base to support long-term site operations and maintenance. ESS will also install stormwater infrastructure to support site drainage and ensure long-term environmental performance.
With multiple crews operating simultaneously across the site, coordination and communication are critical. ESS field teams work closely with project partners, engineers, and subcontractors to maintain schedule, manage site logistics, and deliver the work efficiently—all while keeping safety the top priority and upholding ESS’s high standards of quality and execution.
Projects like Sunflower Sky highlight ESS’s expanding experience in the renewable energy sector and demonstrate how the company’s heavy civil capabilities translate directly to large-scale solar developments. From site preparation and access infrastructure to utility installation, ESS brings the equipment, workforce, and operational discipline required to deliver complex energy projects that support the growing demand for reliable, sustainable power.
