Project OverviewDescripción del proyecto

Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) was honored to deliver critical infrastructure improvements for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) with the successful realignment of Missouri Route 3 between U.S. Route 24 and Route BB in Randolph County. This $2.67-million project addressed a major landslide that had rendered the roadway impassable since 2021. Leveraging ESS' expertise and dedication to excellence, Missouri Route 3 successfully reopened in August 2024, reestablishing a critical transportation connection for the community.

The ESS team completed the following project scope:

+ Slide Repair: Stabilizing and reshaping the landslide area to ensure long-term roadway safety.
+ Earthwork: Excavating 30,000 cubic yards of material and replacing it with 18,200 cubic yards of rock fill on a 2:1 slope.
+ Underground Storm Systems: Updating stormwater management infrastructure to improve drainage and prevent future erosion.
+ Concrete Paving: Delivering durable paving solutions for the realigned roadway.
+ Rock Liner: Reinforcing the slope with a rock liner for additional stability.

Working adjacent to a 180-foot quarry highwall presented significant challenges. ESS implemented an innovative benching and terracing excavation technique to remove material while safely minimizing the risk of slope destabilization. This method involved creating stepped levels along the slope, allowing controlled excavation and placement of rock fill. Additionally, precise monitoring of the highwall and surrounding soil conditions ensured the safety of the crew and equipment throughout the project.

The safety of our crew and the community was paramount throughout the project. Work near the quarry highwall was paused to assess and address risks, with our superintendent leading efforts to enforce strict safety protocols. These included regular inspections, protective barriers, geotechnical assessments, and daily safety briefings. Proactive measures ensured all activities were conducted responsibly and with the highest safety standards.

Despite the inherent challenges, ESS completed the project ahead of schedule in less than seven months, highlighting our team’s efficiency and dedication to meeting client expectations. With the completion of this project, ESS is proud to have played a key role in restoring connectivity, improving safety, and supporting the economic vitality of Randolph County.
