Project OverviewDescripción del proyecto
Interstate 17 has been a vital resource in the daily lives of Maricopa County residents since 1978. As a main artery of the Arizona transportation system, decades of heavy traffic caused sections of the rubber asphalt surface to deteriorate. Major potholes and debris littered the roadway, threatening the safety of community members and the traveling public. When the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) sought an infrastructure contractor to lead the rehabilitation of this critical corridor, Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) rose to the challenge.
ESS was selected as the general contractor to perform all diamond grinding, joint sealing, bridge joint rehabilitation, concrete repairs and asphalt milling and overlay. As the nation’s fourth-largest county by population, it was imperative that crews worked diligently to reopen the roadway for Maricopa County residents. Shutdown periods were limited to nights and weekends to reduce potential disruptions to the community and ensure that work was completed in the allotted 340 calendar days.
The successful delivery of this interstate would not have been possible without the strong relationships built between ESS and ADOT. As veterans of the region, they provided our team with tremendous support and insight throughout each step of the project process. When an unforeseen storm surge caused damage to recently milled asphalt, ADOT contacted ESS leaders to immediately begin finding solutions to the issue. Although challenges forced us to reevaluate our plans, they provided opportunities for growth which ultimately strengthened our partnership.
Upon completion, this $23.8 million roadway restoration included 697,624 square yards of diamond grinding, 708,811 linear feet of joint seal, 730,179 square yards of asphalt milling and 10,900 tons of asphalt overlay. ESS is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Maricopa County and looks forward to the future of our partnership with the Arizona Department of Transportation.
