Project OverviewDescripción del proyecto
Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) was selected by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Bentonville, Arkansas as the General Contractor for the reconstruction of the roughly 7,700-foot-wide and 25-inch thick Taxiway B. This project required the replacement of a major section of Taxiway B that was deteriorated by an Alkali/Silica Reaction (ASR). This reaction caused the concrete to swell and crack due to moisture exposure over time. In order to prevent further degradation at the hands of ASR, a 15-inch layer of cement-treated permeable base (CTPB) was applied.
ESS originally completed the first phase of this project in 2020 before returning in March of 2022. During phase one, the crews converted an existing parallel runway into a temporary taxiway for aircraft to use until the project was completed.
Our team utilized innovative technologies and on-site materials to complete this reconstruction according to safety standards and under budget. By using off-road haul trucks, ESS minimized their need to cross into aircraft traffic routes. Additional scope for our crews included the construction of an alternate taxiway for continued airport operations, the installation of underground storm piping and new structural fill, pavement rehabilitation, and the installation of a new lighting and underground utility system.
This project was ultimately successful due to the priority placed on consistent communication between our crews and airport personnel. ESS teams were proud to complete the second phase of the XNA Taxiway B Reconstruction project on November 3, 2022.
