Taking Out the Trash: ESS Takes on Its Largest Landfill Project to Date

Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) crews are pushing forward on the largest landfill expansion in company history — a multi-year, multi-cell buildout at Springfield’s Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill.

Spread across roughly 40 acres and built out in multiple phases, the project is a massive undertaking and marks a significant investment in the region’s long-term waste management capacity.

A Vital Piece of Springfield’s Waste System

The Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill is a key part of how Springfield manages waste responsibly. Even as the city continues to push recycling, composting, and other innovative programs to shrink the waste stream, Noble Hill remains the backbone of the region’s solid waste system. It provides reliable, environmentally secure disposal for solid waste and other non-hazardous materials, ensuring the community has the capacity it needs in the decades ahead.

A 40-Acre Buildout Worth Celebrating

The project expansion covers multiple landfill cells that will support Springfield’s growing waste-management needs long-term. Building several cells at the same time sets an aggressive pace, one that fits the ESS style of tackling big, complex work with confidence. Cell 3, approximately 11 acres, is the largest cell we are taking on with additional cells under construction simultaneously. This approach allows ESS to maintain momentum while meeting the City’s timeline for new capacity.

Shoutout to the Crew

Every major project starts with a crew willing to put in the work, and Noble Hill is no exception. From early planning to boots on the ground, ESS teams have already completed the initial excavation and site prep, established haul roads, and begun shaping the cell expansion that will support the region for decades. Their focus, coordination, and drive are already setting the tone for the entire effort.

Worth Keeping an Eye On

As the project advances, the new cells will increase disposal capacity, support the city’s sustainability goals, and help maintain a stable, well-managed waste system for the region. Ensuring the landfill continues operating safely, responsibly, and efficiently.

The Noble Hill expansion is just getting started, but the momentum is already strong. Over the next several years, ESS will deliver a sequence of major milestones as new cells take shape, and the site evolves into its next generation of service for Springfield.

Noble Hill is big. It’s important. It’s the kind of challenge ESS is built for.
