Meet Our New Safety Coordinator

Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) is proud to announce that employee-owner Kevin Smith, former asphalt paving foreman, has been named Safety Coordinator for the Springfield region. Kevin has been an employee-owner for more than fifteen years, and is an integral part of the ESS family. In his new position, Kevin will be responsible for safety training, safety compliance, and serve as a safety resource for all of our employee-owners. ESS strives to maintain a safety culture that is fully integrated into our operations. One of Kevin’s primary roles will be to ensure that our employee-owners are trained, structured, and equipped to work safe.

Tyson Collins, Assistant Vice President stated, “Kevin is passionate about whatever he puts his mind to whether that be a paving foreman or safety coordinator. I already know he is going to be an excellent fit for this position because he has a lot of talent, and has safety at the forefront of his mind. I am definitely looking forward to seeing Kevin excel as our new safety coordinator.”

Kevin’s transition into his new role has already begun. Building off of his seasoned experience as an asphalt foreman, Kevin has been completing formal as well as practical safety training and education while winding down his foreman duties. He is currently working on earning his Smith System Driver certification. Once certified, Kevin will play a key role in educating employee-owners on Smith System practices company wide; a priority initiative in 2021.

“In order for our teams to be successful, we have to practice our three integral pillars of construction – safety, quality and production. Without one of these pillars, we would crumble. It’s encouraging to see Kevin, a long-time employee-owner, bring his operations perspective to this role; combing his field experience and passion for safety. He already represents the three pillars of success, and I think this is a natural next step for him,” stated Tim Paulson, Co-CEO.

As Kevin gears up for a big transition, Keith Burleson is ready to step up to the plate. Keith will replace Kevin as Asphalt Paving Foreman. With more than 17 years of experience and lots of hard-earned industry knowledge, Keith will excel in this new role.
