Behind the Pavement: The Crews Driving Progress on I-70
Out on the Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville project, progress is happening through tight corridors, under heavy traffic, and on a clock that never slows down.
For the Heavy Highway and Columbia pipe crews, the work behind the pavement is just as critical as the final surface drivers see. Long before paving begins, these crews are laying the groundwork — often in conditions most people never notice.
In some areas, crews are working within just 25 feet of space, hemmed in by live traffic on a stretch of highway that carries 61,000 vehicles each day.
“It’s pretty congested out here,” shared Pipe Superintendent, David Cook. “You’ve got to know how to get in and out of your work zone, manage traffic, and make sure deliveries are lined up before they even arrive.”
That level of coordination is what keeps the job moving safely and efficiently.
Built on Safety
In an environment like this, safety is front of mind. Crews are working days, nights, and long shifts, often 11 to 12 hours at a time. Working in a median means every movement in and out of the work zone is carefully timed, and even small delays can impact productivity and shift the overall schedule.
Despite that, the crews have adapted.
“They keep their head on a swivel,” said David. “They’ve done a great job with safety — PPE, staying clear of barriers, watching traffic. It’s how we work.”
For drivers passing through, there’s a role to play, too. Slow down, stay alert, and help keep our work zones safe.
Coordination Across Crews
Behind every stretch of progress is constant coordination between teams.
Pipe crews, grading crews, trucking partners, and DOT teams all play a role in keeping the project on schedule. That collaboration is what turns individual efforts into forward momentum.
Support from Columbia pipe crews and additional team members has helped drive progress during these critical phases, proving that big pushes require even bigger teamwork.
Pride in the Process
When the project is complete, drivers will see an improved roadway, smooth pavement, and steady traffic flow. What they won’t see is the effort that it took to get there — the long hours, the coordination, and the commitment to getting it done right.
Behind every mile of pavement is a crew that made it possible. We appreciate our employee-owners’ hard work and dedication.
