Columbia Regional Airport Runway 2-20 Extension

The expansion of runway 2-20 at the Columbia Regional Airport (COU) was a significant step in creating new opportunities for travel to and from Columbia, Missouri. The project allowed for large aircraft to commute in and out of the airport, an important feature to complete COU's new terminal. After years of planning, the City of Columbia selected Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) to make the runway changes.

Working on an active airport takes awareness, communication, and efficiency. Being mindful of when planes are taking off and landing is a unique part of the safety process. A blast fence was installed to protect our employee-owners from the jet blasts that occur during takeoff. ESS prioritized high productivity rates in order to minimize disruption to active aviation. Our project teams placed 32,000 SY of 12.5” pavement in 11 working days.

The total construction cost of the project was approximately $8.7 Million. The scope of the project included a complete reconstruction of the intersection of runway 2-20 and runway 13-31. In addition to a large volume of excavation and concrete paving, the project also included the installation of an underdrain system, a full electrical package, retro-reflective markers, pavement markings, and seeding.

The runway expansion was completed on schedule and has helped expand the airport’s opportunities to gain new flights and provide more convenience to Columbia Regional Airport (COU) travelers.
