Project Summary

Relieving congestion at the intersection of I-44 and Rt. 65 with an emphasis on speed. The new fly over bridge provided safe travel for commuters and was completed well within time requirements.

Project Features

  • The I-44 and US Highway 65 interchange was one of Missouri's most congested and unsafe intersection. Emery Sapp & Sons Inc was awarded the contract to reconstruct the intersection in 2006 with an extremely high level of importance being placed on expeditious completion and continuity of interstate traffic.
  • The work consisted of grading and paving ramp improvements, constructing a new fly over bridge, installing 64,000 square feet of MSE walls, and replacing the north bound bridge on US highway 65. The total length of the improvement on US Highway 65 was 1.69 miles.
  • The flyover bridge was a 7 span structure built on a 7 1/2' Deep Steel Girder system. Bridge spans were: 180 feet, 200 feet, 200 feet, 224 feet, 224 feet, 200 feet and 180 feet). The north bound bridge was 55' Wide with two 67 feet spans. The total project included 148,000 cubic yards of Unclassified Excavation, 75,000 cubic yards of Embankment In Place and 78, 200 square yards of Concrete Paving.
  • The construction work was completed six months ahead of the contract deadline resulting in a bonus payment to Emery Sapp & Sons Inc. The company's effort in minimizing inconvenience to travelers and maintaining traffic on I-44 was featured in a local newspaper.
